Full Plates

Wow! Our plates have been full this month! I had intended to write for this blog every day, but that just hasn't been possible.

We have replaced our sump pump, water heater, and two furnaces this month. Today, we had to have our van towed to an automotive service shop. We think the starter is bad. Hopefully, it will be a simple fix and we can get it back tomorrow. Otherwise, we will have to figure out a solution to our transportation needs. Our other working vehicle only seats six.

January has been full of cuddles on the couches under heavy comforters reading historical fiction trying to stay warm and boiling water for baths and washing dishes. Activities that were suspended for the holidays are back in session, making our schedule full.

Now that we have heat and hot water, we're more able to focus on lessons and projects that were so difficult to attend to before. I miss the cuddling during the day. The children seemed to bicker less. So, I continue to read to the children snuggled under the comforters when we can in the evenings. Actually, I even called a snuggle time during the afternoon yesterday.

Our plates have been full and our finances have been tested. However, God has supplied our needs just as he did for the Philippians.

"And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19

I intended to start posting to this blog on New Year's Day. I have had so much on my plate lately that that did not happen. My inbox contained the Christian HomeKeeper (TM) Network e-mail with a new Homekeeper's Journal entry. So, just to start things off and allow you to get to know me a bit, I have decided to participate in today's journal. You can find the original Journal here.

Today’s Journal is all about Winter and what you do to make your home warm, inviting, comfortable and the things you struggle with in the Winter.

In my Winter Kitchen…
there are artisan rolls in the oven. I'll have to pull them apart after baking them. I forgot to check on them while they were rising. When I remembered them, they had already spread to the edges of the stone I'm baking them on.

I have to heat water for washing dishes today. Our water heater went out Sunday. Hopefully, my husband will be able to install our new one this afternoon when he gets home from work. I spent most of yesterday heating water so the girls and I could bathe before going to our Sonflower Scouts meeting yesterday evening.

The hardest part about Winter for my household is ….
stopping the drafts. Our house is very old and difficult to heat.

My favorite Winter time meal is…
hmm. I'm not sure I really have a favorite.

I Do/Do Not (choose one) tend to be depressed in the Winter…
I do not really get too depressed in the Winter any more than I do in any other season.

A favorite Winter time activity my family enjoys is …
snuggling under blankets and watching movies or shows. We also enjoy playing in the snow. We are all set this year with snow pants, snow boots, and snow gloves for everyone. In the past we haven't always had much more than coats and mittens.

To help my home look and feel inviting in the Winter…
I love burning candles and simmering homemade potpourri. My favorite scents are vanilla, cinnamon, and apple.

How I dress to stay warm …
Dressing in layers is a must in our home when it is cold.

One really important health rule for the Winter time I’d like to share …
is wear gloves! I tend to skip the gloves when I really can't afford to. My hands really get dry in the winter. Even when I wear gloves and use lots of lotion, my hands will crack and bleed. I keep New Skin on hand for sealing the cracks.
